IJ Start Canon Pixma TS8151
IJ Start Canon Pixma TS8151– Canon’s amazingly compact multifunction printer has more features and functions than most large office MFPs. Printing, scanning, and copying are provided, but with three bins, it can print onto blank solid discs and envelopes and paper of any size.
The scanner resolution is very impressive and the print resolution is even higher at 9,600 x 2,400 dpi. This MFP – which sells for £ 150 (around $ 195, AU $ 260) – adds an SD card slot to its input and can print on both sides of ordinary paper. The 4.3 inch touch screen is one of the best on the market too, but it is not a unique selling point. With six ink cartridges instead of the usual four or five, this device has a clear advantage in terms of printing color images.
Design and build
Canon is a miniaturization expert, and somehow, all of these features fit into a delicate shoebox-sized unit that is packed tightly enough to fit in a desk drawer. Nearly every Pixma TS8151 panel folds or slides to reveal an access hole, or other paper tray. Our favorite design feature is the way the paper delivery tray automatically slides out each time you print.
Our only concern is that there are so many moving plastic pieces that can break easily over time. Both trays are shaken in both trays. On a more positive note, the SD card slot will be useful for photographers and it’s a good idea to see the full set of Ethernet and USB ports.
the features
The main feature offered by Canon above its rival brands is the six cartridge ink system. The extra color is gray, which helps Pixma express shadows and that means you have to replace the black ink tank less often.
Printing and scanning in full color and with high resolution can be done easily from a Mac or PC, or a mobile device using a companion application called Canon Print on iOS or Android.
Your connectivity options are complete, with a square USB port, plus a front USB connector for the thumb drive and an SD card slot for the camera, while your wireless options include Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi direct and NFC to combine two NFC-capable phones.
There are two paper trays that can be loaded simultaneously with plain paper and envelopes, or photo paper, and the 4.3-inch color screen is a touch screen. You can use this to access the Canon Cloud Link feature which makes it easy to print directly from social media sites like Instagram. These images look pretty good when printed on square (13 x 13 cm) photo paper.
Settings and operations
Canon has made the process of setting up the Pixma TS8151 and online simple, provided you have access to a computer when you do, because you have to use it to join a Wi-Fi network. It is possible to only use the touch screen pad, but it takes longer. What should be there is an application to do everything for you. The Canon Print application is only for printing and scanning to and from your phone (and this is good enough).
After connecting, we had no problems printing wirelessly from a phone or Mac, and to copy and scan using only the printer, we found the touch screen display as a refreshing intuitive interface.
Performance
The Pixma TS8151 isn’t the fastest inkjet out there, producing mono pages at 15 per minute, but they look sharp and black, not to mention consistent every time. Characters look a little heavier than laser printers, but they also have an attractive black color that might be caused by Canon’s special black pigmentation.
This printer is a bit noisier than the smoothly running HP LaserJet Pro MFP M227fdw that we recently reviewed, but in general, it runs quietly, especially when you really switch to the Silent Mode of the machine.
